KANSAS CITY, Mo. — One person is dead and up to 15 people were injured after gunfire broke out at the end of the Chiefs victory rally Wednesday at Union Station, according to police.
Kansas City Police Department Chief Stacey Graves confirmed the fatality and said 10 to 15 people had been shot.
She attributed the shooting to “two bad actors,” but said it was unclear if additional people were also responsible. Two people were taken into custody.
The motive remained unknown Wednesday afternoon.
Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas said the shooting Wednesday was “absolutely a tragedy.”
Lucas said the city had been in touch with the Kansas City Chiefs and they reported everyone was accounted for. He also said the White House had been in touch and offered assistance in the investigation.
When the gunfire erupted, Lucas said he was inside Union Station and ran for safety. As he was leaving the scene, he saw Kansas City Fire Department crews administering aid to people who were seriously injured.
Graves said 800 law enforcement officers were working Wednesday’s rally.
Gov. Mike Parson and his wife, Teresa, were at the rally.
“This was a tragic conclusion to a celebration we had all looked forward to -– none more than Teresa and me,” he said in a statement. “The first lady and I were present when shots broke out. Thanks to the professionalism of our security officers and first responders, Teresa and I and our staff are safe and secure.”
The shooting at Kansas City’s Union Station Wednesday was the metro area’s 25th mass shooting in the past five years, and the second in 2024.
Kansas City’s most recent mass shooting occurred less than a block away at the Crown Center shopping mall on Wednesday, Jan. 17.
