State police have identified the person killed in a two-car accident on Interstate 93 in Salem last week as a Massachusetts man.
At 4:25 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 1, troopers responded to a serious crash south of Exit 1 involving a black Hyundai Santa Fe — driven by William Russel, 59, of Merrimack — and a blue Chevrolet Trax. According to police, the Hyundai came upon heavy traffic near the state line and failed to slow or stop in time to avoid crashing into the Chevrolet mini SUV.
The Salem Fire Department attempted lifesaving measures on the Chevrolet driver, but the driver — identified as Jermaine Adams, 48, of Haverhill, Mass. — was pronounced dead at the scene.
While state police processed the crash scene, southbound traffic was routed off Exit 1 and traffic stopped just above the scene was rerouted at median crossover points to the northbound side.
The southbound lanes of I-93 in Salem just north of the Massachusetts line were closed for roughly three hours, with traffic backed up for miles and drivers stuck on the highway for several hours.
Images shared from the scene showed one damaged vehicle up against the median barrier and the other on the right side of the highway.
All aspects of the crash are under investigation.
